On January 1, 2008, Victoria will be the first Australian state to fully implement a charter of human rights and responsibilities. The Victorian charter is based on similar models that operate successfully in Britain, New Zealand and our own ACT.

Unlike the US-style Bill of Rights, which has contributed to a more litigious society, our charter leaves the final say with parliament, not the courts says Rob Hulls, Victorian Attorney General. The Australian, December 9, 2007.
