Our rights are under threat

Writing in The Mercury on October 07, 2008 Greg Barns is curious why, amid much recent talk about restoring and renewing faith in democracy in Tasmania, virtually no-one is talking about giving Tasmanians what every individual in a democracy deserves, a charter of rights.

He points out that, although 12 months have elapsed since the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute’s extensive report on a state charter, the Lennon/Bartlett Governments have done absolutely nothing and only the Greens are unambiguously committed to the introduction of a charter of rights.
