The Role of Parliament under an Australian Charter of Human Rights

AUSTRALIAN SENATE OCCASIONAL LECTURE SERIES.Australia is in the midst of debate about whether it should have a national charter of human rights. One question that has assumed central importance is what role Parliament might play under such a law. Would an Australian charter undermine parliamentary sovereignty? How might it otherwise change Parliament’s role? What does the experience of other nations tell us? These questions will be addressed by George Willaims in this lecture.

Professor George Williams is the Anthony Mason Professor of Law and Foundation Director of the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law at the University of New South Wales. He is also a Visiting Fellow of the Australian National University, Canberra.
