THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO THE NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS CONSULTATION COMMITTEE IS JUNE 15, 2009
On 10 December 2008 the attorney-general, Robert McClelland launched the National Human Rights Consultation, to seek the views of the Australian community on how human rights and responsibilities should be protected in the future.
The committee’s task it is to consult broadly with the community, including those who live in rural and regional areas, about the protection and promotion of human rights. Key questions to be addressed are:
- Which human rights (including corresponding responsibilities) should be protected and promoted?
- Are these human rights currently sufficiently protected and promoted?
- How could Australia better protect and promote human rights?
The Committee expects to report to the Australian Government by early August 2009 on the issues raised and the options identified for the Government to consider to enhance the protection and promotion of human rights.
